Study on Technology and Media Literacy With Respect to...

The problem posed in the study concerns technology media literacy with respect to university students and their professors. At the local level, some professors and university librarians may also view media literacy as a problem. Easy access to so many information and entertainment choices now requires that people acquire new knowledge and skills to make wise and responsible decisions (Hobbs, 2011, p. 14). Because technology and entertainment media are part of everyday life for many people, assumptions may be made about proficiency and levels of understanding. Children who have grown up with the World Wide Web and various digital technologies the so-named Millennial Generation have access to more information than any generation in history. For educators, this presents a paradox. Students have access to more information, but are not necessarily better informed. Research indicates that consumers of technology media seldom view their media critically or make informed choices. They may ac cept the status quo and miss opportunities to learn and understand new resources and techniques. Educators must help their students navigate the increasingly complex environment created by the various technologies, and they must also help them develop the skills necessary to be critical of the information to which they have access (Considine, Horton and Moorman, 2009).
